Marsabit National Park is both a national park and nature reserve lying in the northern region of Kenya at Mount Marsabit near Marsabit town.
The forests around the area comprise of numerous extinct volcanic craters such as Gof Redo which is about 5 kilometers north of Marsabit in the fork of the roads to Moyale and North Horr.
The lower slopes of the Park’s forests consist of scrubland. The Park is situated 560 kilometers north of Nairobi in Marsabit County in the former Eastern Province of which its reserve is famously identified for its zebra population and bird sanctuary.
Marsabit is not among the best protected areas in Kenya but visitors to the Park will also enjoy many amazing things from there of which some may not be even spotted in other best Parks in the country (Kenya).
The Park paves a great opportunity for its visitors to view a variety of wildlife such as; Zebras, cape buffaloes, Kudus, black and white Colobus, blue monkeys, bushbucks, sunis, and African leopards however the park also boosts about 350 bird species of which 52 are birds of prey.
Other wildlife species in the Park include the elephants which have impressive tusks, all enabling a visitor to get a great experience from his or her safari in Marsabit.
The cliffs in the northern end of Lake Paradise (in Gof Sokorte Gurda) are home to a number of birds such as; the Ruppell’s griffon vultures, peregrine falcons, mountain buzzards, black kites and African fish eagles. Other birds found on the lake include; ducks such as garganeys, southern pochards and teals, red-knobbed coots, hammer-kops, ibises, purple herons, and yellow-billed storks.
On the lower slopes of the forest of the park, there are populations of olive baboons, vervet monkeys, Peter’s gazelles, Beisa Oryx, striped hyenas, caracals and aardwolves.
In the 1970s, the park was made more popular because of residing elephants with the longest tusks in the world.
One elephant called Ahmed was under constant surveillance and when he died, his tusks were found to weigh over 300 kilograms.
